The bitter melon (or also known as bitter gourd) looks like a cucumber but has ugly gourd-like bumps all over it.
As the name implies, this vegetable is a melon just it is bitter. There are 2 varieties of this vegetable: the one grows to about 20 cm long, is pale green in color and oblong. The other is the smaller version, less than 10 cm long, has a darker green color and it’s oval.
Both types have seeds that are white when they are not ripe and turn red when they are ripe. The vegetable-fruit turn reddish-orange when it’s ripe and becomes even more bitter.
Bitter gourd thrives in humid and hot climates, so they are commonly found in Asian countries and South America.
Westerners are not very used to bitter melons so they may find them more difficult to consume. However, if you can generally take a bitter taste, you will be able to take this too. Try it, at least for all its healthful benefits!
NUTRITIONAL BENEFITS
The bitter gourds are very low in calories but full of precious nutrients. It is an amazing source of vitamins B1, B2, and B3, vitamin C, magnesium, folate, phosphorus, zinc, manganese, and has high dietary fiber. It’s also rich in iron, contains twice the calcium of spinach, twice the beta-carotene of broccoli, and twice the potassium of one banana.
Bitter melon contains a unique phyto-constituent which has been confirmed to have a hypoglycemic effect that is called charantin. There is also another insulin-like compound and it’s known as polypeptide P which in some diabetic patients has been suggested as insulin replacement.
HEALTH BENEFITS
A small number of other fruits/vegetables offer medicinal properties for these diseases as the bitter melon does.
Cholera: In early stages of cholera, take two teaspoons juice of bitter gourd leaves, mix it with two teaspoons white onion juice and a teaspoonful lime juice. Sip this concoction every day until you get well.
Blood disorders: Bitter gourd juice is extremely beneficial for treating blood disorders such as blood boils and itching due to toxemia. Mix two ounces of fresh bitter gourd juice with a bit of lime juice. Sip it slowly on an empty stomach every day for a period of 4-6 months and see improvement in your condition.
Cancer: The juice of bitter gourd contains the enzyme that inhibits the transportation of glucose (sugar) which lowers the blood sugar levels, also cuts off cancer cells’ food supply, delaying their growth.

CONSUMPTION TIPS
Choose those unripe bitter melons that are firm, similar to a cucumber. Avoid those that have already turned orange or have soft spots. Ripe bitter melons can be very bitter.
Store the bitter melons in the vegetable bin your fridge which is on the right temperature. It should keep for 3-4 days.
Keeping the bitter melons at room temperature or with other vegetables and fruits are going to hasten the melon to ripen and become more bitter, as a result of the emission of ethylene gas.
Clean the bitter melon under cold running water and brush it with a soft vegetable brush. For preparation, slice the melon length-wise and scoop out the seeds. To lessen this bitter flavor, soak it in some salt water for around 30 minutes before juicing or cooking.

Do not consume more than 2 oz. of bitter melon or more than 2 melons per day. Excessive consumption could cause diarrhea or mild abdominal pain. Diabetics taking hypoglycemic drugs are going to need to alter the dosage of their drugs if they consume bitter melon regularly. It’s suggested to consult your doctor.
Pregnant women, it’s better to avoid taking too much bitter gourd or its juice since it may stimulate the uterus that could lead to preterm labor.
